Portable hyperspectral field workstation on NVIDIA Jetson
Client project: project fee $80,000. For a university agricultural research team: a portable field workstation that puts hyperspectral acquisition, an NVIDIA Jetson computer, a display, operator controls, equipment power and data storage into one case. We designed the Jetson carrier board, the system baseboard, the power chain and the harness, fitted it all into the enclosure, built the prototype and prepared it for a 50-unit follow-on run.
- Client type: University agricultural research team (not named)
- Units: Engineering prototype, then 50 units of follow-on production
- Project fee: $80,000
- Stage: Client project; production priced separately
Overview and tech stack
- Project type
- Large robots and complex electromechanical systems
- Computing
- NVIDIA Jetson on a custom carrier board
- Electronics
- Custom system baseboard, power distribution and protection, cable harness
- Sensing
- Hyperspectral camera interface, storage and peripheral interfaces
- Operator
- Built-in display, keyboard and touchpad
- Mechanical
- Portable enclosure, screen mounting, internal frames, cooling and airflow
Main challenges
- Jetson heat, the hyperspectral camera and the electrical clearances all had to fit one compact case
- Power, cable routing and connector access were planned together with cooling
- The assembly sequence had to be repeatable before the 50-unit run
What we built
- Electronic architecture linking computing, sensing, display, storage and power
- Custom Jetson carrier board and system baseboard
- Power chain, protection circuits and harness design
- Enclosure, screen mounting, hardware retention and connector openings
- Thermal assessment and airflow for stable field use
- Prototype build: PCB fabrication, assembly, harness, bring-up and verification
- Production preparation for the 50-unit follow-on run
Project figures
- Project fee
- USD 80,000 (one-time system engineering)
- Follow-on production
- 50 units, priced separately
- Included
- electronics and PCBs; mechanical design; software and firmware integration; engineering prototypes and testing
